Volunteers needed for CHS Winter Holiday Bazaar - 12/3/11

On Saturday, December 3rd from 11 am to 2 pm the annual CHS Winter Holiday Bazaar will be held in the atrium. Two seniors are needed to help in a very special way: one to sub in for Santa (he's booked on 12/3) and one to be Santa's elf helper. A Santa costume is available. The elf assistant would have to come up with his/her own "creative" costume.

Additionally, both juniors and seniors are needed to help with: set up, decorating, and clean up, and entertainment of any kind!

Sabres Green Team looks for volunteers

Buffalo Sabres are teaming up with National Fuel and the Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER to clean up the Ohio Street Boat Launch in Buffalo on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

After the clean-up is over, there will be a volunteer picnic from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at American Legion Niagara Frontier Post 1041 (533 Amherst Street) and a post-event Boom Days Party at Dug’s Dive beginning at 6 p.m. with fireworks around 9 p.m.

“We are looking forward to an exciting spring both on and off the ice in Buffalo,” Sabres President Ted Black said. “Our spring clean-up day is a great opportunity for Sabres fans around Western New York to get outside and make a difference in the community.”

Makowski's fifteenth annual African Marketplace will take place during the school day on Monday – April 4th, Wednesday – April 6th, Friday – April 8th, and in the evening on April 8th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Our Marketplace…Looking Back Over The Years”, which will highlight many of the previous themes and most popular activities. The Marketplace is a school wide event that involves fun and learning experiences through child centered activities.

Makowski is in need of many volunteers to help us supervise a variety of stations, which include crafts, games, tattoos and small purchases of a variety of items. 1) VOLUNTEER TRAINING: There will be two trainings held during the month of February on Wednesday, 2/9- 3-4:30pm and Thursday, 2/17 from 3-4:30pm. These orientations are open to new and existing volunteers as a “refresher” course. The orientation will take place at the UNYTS offices at 110 Broadway, Buffalo 14203. 2) RECORDS UPDATE: With the new year, we are still looking to update our volunteer records. Please let me know if any of your contact information (address, e-mail, phone) has changed or if you would like to be taken off the weekly e-mail list. Thank You!

3) Data Entry Volunteer Needed: The Donate Life Foundation is in need of a data entry volunteer. The volunteer would be asked to participate in a data entry training on February 15 from 9-12 at the UNYTS offices on Broadway in the upstairs conference room. After that they would be asked to enter the data, i.e. names and addresses, the following days that week 16, 17, 18 for 2-6 hours a day (flexible dependent on volunteer’s schedule).

BLOOD DRIVE HOSPITALITY TABLE VOLUNTEER –February 2011

A volunteer will represent UNYTS at a blood drive and help monitor donors at the refreshment table after donation. It is important for volunteers to express appreciation to the donor for giving the Gift of Life, pre-register them for an upcoming blood drive and encourage the donor to potentially volunteer at UNYTS in other capacities. Specifically, they are looking for some help in their Refugee Resettlement department. It would involve helping their families apply for public assistance, and helping with set up and organization of case files. More adventurous students could also help with orientations or setting up apartments for arriving families.

There is a rare opportunity for you to help out ON SITE THIS WEEK - Wednesday Sept 29th through Friday Oct 1st!! Buffalo ReUse be deconstructing and processing materials on their current green demolition project located at 529 Colvin Ave near Taunton. It’s a very large cinder block warehouse and they need help denailing, loading the truck, and palletizing block, brick and other materials. Amanda is the project manager and she will be directing volunteers on-site. Please wear work clothes, remember to dress for the weather - wear layers and heavy soled boots/shoes for your own safety (steel toe–if you have them). Extra kudos for bright safety orange or yellow! Please arrive on-site at 529 Colvin Ave anytime after 9am. Hard hats and other safety gear will be available, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

There is a port-o-jon on-site. It’s a good idea to pack a lunch and bring extra water. Be ready to sweat!

BUFFALO REUSE CONTINUES TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE ON THE EAST SIDE

In an effort to beautify Buffalo’s east side, Buffalo ReUSE will partner with Re-Tree Western New York for a fall tree care and planting event. Buffalo ReUSE invites volunteers to join them in this community-wide effort on Saturday November 6, 2010, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. A potluck meal will follow the day’s work.

Buffalo ReUSE is teaming up with Re-Tree WNY for its sixth tree planting on the east side. As part of the Buffalo ReUSE mission, the organization works to “green” east side neighborhoods by planting trees, community gardens, and vegetable plots. This fall, the tree care event will feature pruning, re-staking, and tree condition evaluation, in addition to planting. Everyone is encouraged to help; training will be available on-site during the event.

Danielle Rovillo, Volunteer Coordinator for Buffalo ReUSE had this to say about the 2010 tree care effort, “This event is great for Buffalo ReUSE and the community. Tree planting is an important part of neighborhood revitalization. This event helps beautify our streets but also raises morale, unites neighbors, promotes energy conservation, and improves air quality. ” During their partnership with Re-Tree, Buffalo ReUSE has successfully planted over 1,000 trees in east side neighborhoods.

The Extended Essay Summer Institute will take place from 9 am to 3 pm on Tuesday, June 29th through Thursday, July 1st on the North Campus of UB.

We will be meeting in the Lockwood Library in Room 109. Parking is available in the Fronczak Lot on the North Campus. On Tuesday morning, either I will be waiting at the lot to hand you a parking pass or the attendant will have them for you. The cost for parking is $4 otherwise.

We encourage you to carpool to UB.

There will be a one hour lunch break each day. You can either bring your own lunch or bring money to buy lunch at one of the restaurant facilities on campus.

Financially Fit, a financial education program for refugees - teaching the basics of banking, budgeting, and navigating US financial systems.

To help make the program accessible to their clients, they offer child care and a meal with the program. So volunteers are needed to make that possible! This time offers a great opportunity to create a learning rich environment for the children, and they provide volunteers strategies of culturally appropriate and developmentally-stimulating activities to share with the children.

The program launches again this January! It runs in 8-week cycles, meeting once a week for financial education. They will have four classes in different language groups, which will run consecutively. Classes are held at Jericho Road Ministries, 184 Barton Street 14213.

Their schedule is:

April 6th through May 26th
Tuesdays, 4:00-6:00pm and 5:00-7:00pm
Wednesdays, 4:30-6:30pm and 5:30-7:30pm

Each of these nights will have two classes overlapping, so the child care need will be from the beginning of the first class to the end of the second, with the greatest number of children during the middle overlapping hour. Kids from both classes will be together in a nursery/play area.

It would be helpful to have volunteers available 15 minutes beforehand (to be briefed, then ready and waiting for the kids), and then flexible to stay 15 minutes after, to allow for clean-up. They know this is a long period of time, so even if you could commit to coming for just the first or the second session of the evening, that would be such a great help! Each class ends with a meal, prepared by one of the international class participants, which volunteers are welcome to join us for.

The sixth seasonal reforesting of the Western New York Area by Re-Tree WNY commences this Saturday in 13 municipalities and the City of Buffalo.

1,700 street trees will be planted by the all-volunteer army trained and assembled by Re-Tree WNY and includes the efforts of 48 City of Buffalo block clubs.

Trees are being off-loaded on Thursday and Friday at two sites, 1120 Seneca Street near Babcock in South Buffalo and 1042 North Forest near Sheridan in Williamsville. Distribution to all locations will be done from these addresses.

Planting in all areas will be at 9AM on Saturday, and will continue until complete. Some municipalities are extending the effort to additional days, as-needed. The Tonawanda planting will be around the Parker Boulevard area and is coordinated with Bradley Rowles, Superintendent of Highways with the Town of Tonawanda. One large Buffalo planting is a coordinated effort between Councilman David Rivera, The Green Fund, Grassroots Gardens, PUSH, and the Grant/Ferry Neighborhood Association.

Anyone who still wishes to volunteer: is being directed to any of the three major plantings: gather at the Re-Tree WNY 14th Street Tree Farm (307 14th Street between Vermont and Rhode Island Streets) for the City of Buffalo; at 333 Dexter Terrace in Tonawanda; or Union & North Forest Roads (Forest Elementary School) in Williamsville.

All sites gather at 9AM - come dressed to plant, with gloves and equipment.

They are a non-profit based in Kenmore that is working to drastically improve the air quality in the area. The air out there is so toxic it’s giving people leukemia and many other skin and respiratory diseases. They have worked with lots of scientists and policy makers to determine exactly what needs to happen – now it just has to get it done!

Working with CAC is a another opportunity for personal growth and to fulfill your CAS hours. Here are a few projects you can get involved in:

Erin Heaney, City Honors Alum & director of the CAC of WNY, became involved in a political canvass when she was in high school and it was one of the most meaningful things she did those 4 years. You will hear some powerful stories and learn a lot.

Organize a community art and testimonial project. If you’re interested in story telling or art, this is a really exciting opportunity. They want to put together a project that tells the stories of their members. They'd like to produce a work of testimonials for their website and perhaps as a tangible installation somewhere in the community. Many members have pretty incredible stories and they'd like to be able to document them and make them more accessible to the rest of the community. They are looking for students who do photography and/or film and are interested in conducting interviews and transcribing them.

Create your own project. If their work sounds exciting, but you are not excited by the projects above, get in touch with them and they will work something out that is meaningful for you!

Literacy Volunteers is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of those in need through education. It will be starting its after school programs throughout the city in October this year. These sites will provide after school programs for children of elementary and secondary school age.

Literacy Volunteers is looking to hire peer tutors for each of the sites that are involved in the program. Peer tutors provide structure and support to the children that are attending the program and they also act as an assistant to the site coordinator at each site. The requirements for the peer tutor position are:

* Be at least 16-20 years of age
* Experience in volunteering and working with youth (preferred)
* Responsibility
* Good communication skills
* Available Monday through Friday 3pm-7pm for the duration of the program

Where: UB North Campus. Go to Lockwood Library. Go here to find out more information about Lockwood and its location on the UB North Campus. Once you're in the library there will either be signs or someone to direct you to where we are meeting.

Parking (carpooling is strongly encouraged): Parking for visitors is limited to certain lots and metered areas on each campus. Visitors to the North Campus can park in the Center for Tomorrow Lot off Flint Road, without a charge and utilize our shuttle service. Additionally, on the North Campus, Visitor Paid Parking is available in the Fronczak Lot. There is an entry charge of $4.00 ($2.00 after 1 pm). On the South Campus, Visitor Paid Parking is in the Michael Farber Lot. Permits or receipts are required in these lots from 7 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

It's crunchtime for the Open House on Saturday, April 25th from noon-4pm and so we're scrambling around getting stuff ready and if you have time this week, there's plenty of tasks at the store from painting the new entry way to schlepping and relocating inventory so we have some room for info tables and food and a space to play games etc.

But the DAY OF of the Open House we need folks as well to be:

* Facilitate the kids' games (water balloons, recycling toss, coloring table, bubble tunnel, sidewalk chalk drawings) We have 2 teen volunteers so far, but we could use a couple more to assist--I'll explain the games more thoroughly
* Setting up food table (area) and working the hot dog grill (making the lemonade etc) making sure there's spoons etc
* If you would like to bring a potluck side salad--like potato, bean, pea, corn, macaroni or condiments or cookies--that's very appreciated and please let me know.
* Helping the guest organizations set up their tables (just directing them to the table and locating chairs is fine)
* Greeting folks as they come in the store and asking if they'd like to sign up for our newsletter
* Some tour guides who can walk folks through the store and brag about all the improvements since last May
* Someone to man the Seedling Swap table
* We haven't had luck getting a free band/performer yet--so we might be making music with veggies but we're waiting on a reply from Blood Thirsty Vegans to see if they might perform for part of the time.

If you're available for setting up--we'll probably start getting tables ready early in the morning (then I have to run to the Power Vista and do my presentation) and I will be back by 11:30 to finish whatever isn't done.

Any help is wonderful, if there's something else you can assist with that isn't listed--I'm all ears!

RUMMAGE SALE:

The Class of 2010 is sponsoring a rummage sale at Central Park United Methodist Church, 216 Beard Avenue, Buffalo, 14214, on Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In order to get ready for the sale, donations of clothes and household items will be dropped off at the church on the following Saturdays from 10 am to noon: 3/28, 4/4, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, and 5/9.

Students needing community service hours are welcome at that time to accept, clean, sort, and price donations and to distribute fliers around the neighborhood. All unsold items on the day of the sale will be donated to the church's clothing pantry, "Clara's Closet", and delivered to charities of the students' choice, so students are also needed the day of the sale, especially at the end of the day at 4:00 pm.

* VEGETABLE GARDENING & POCKET PARKS --they will have several spaces over the next 6mos which they will transform from brown/weedy vacant lots into inviting green spaces and/or edible or flower gardens. Work would include collecting soil samples, clearing/mowing, building garden beds and paths, sowing seeds, weeding, watering and harvesting among other things.

* TREE PLANTING & MAINTENANCE --they have planted over 400 trees and will participate again with ReTREE WNY this May so there's plenty of trees that need to be re-wired/staked and pruned over the next season. If students want to participate during this planting and learn the ropes, they would really love it!

* STREET BLITZES --this is where they descend upon a street and go from one end to the other collecting trash, pruning trees and shrubs, edging and assisting neighbors with small projects, maybe even some painting or flower planting.

* REHAB-LABS --there are 2 houses we are rehabbing and projects range from clearing debris, gutting walls, painting, installing fixtures, refinishing floors and more.

* TOOL LENDING LIBRARY --they need assistance collecting tools of all kinds (as well as how-to books)- -used and new --they will create training/safety videos and label and sort the tools for the public to borrow and maintain their properties.

* DIY WORKSHOPS --if students (or their parents) want to assist or teach home repair and maintenance workshops like plumbing, window repair, laying tile, installing drywall etc they can host a workshop.

Generally speaking, students should be prepared to get dirty and dress in layers --longjohns and sweatshirts etc, work gloves and boots. Buffao ReUse will provide the goggles and other safety equipment as needed. Right now, they do not have heat in their building so it's really important for students to dress warm. Saturdays are usually the days they do big stuff, but now that they have the gardens starting in April students can volunteer throughout the summer--even on weekdays. Students can show up at the store to help process inventory and with projects too--it's open Tues-Sat from 7:30-5pm.

If there will be more than 5 students in a group, Buffalo ReUse would like to get a headsup to make sure that the prep projects and equipment we'll be available.

Buffalo ReUse is also desperately in need of students that can edit video, turn it into a DVD and upload some clips on-line--some of it's kind of boring material, but they also want to get footage of our projects and shenanigans and interviews to post on their youtube account and website as well.

Also, April 25th they will have an EARTH WARMING PARTY from noon-4pm and welcome any displays students might have created (for a science fair or something) which highlight urban issues, environmental stewardship or innovative green energy/ideas or even some wacky demonstrations or games for kids too (like a recycling game or craft).

If any students know things like bike repair, then Buffalo ReUse would love to have a clinic for their neighbors! Performers for that day would also be great.

2009 Spring Planting With Re-Tree WNY

Re-Tree WNY is partnering with the City of Buffalo to again provide free trees and supplies to plant within the public right-of-way (between sidewalk and street curb) and non-Olmsted parks in neighborhoods this Spring on May 2 nd & 3rd.

If you are interested in doing a neighborhood tree planting this Spring in the City of Buffalo, Re-Tree WNY is asking all interested groups to follow the steps outlined below in order to secure trees for the planting:

Step 1: Register your group here: www.city-buffalo.org/retreewny

Step 2: Once your registration has been received and accepted, you will be able to access the online tree-planting database at the same site.

Step 3: The online tree-planting database will show specific locations in your neighborhood that have been pre-approved for tree planting. From this database, you can reserve your tree planting locations for the spring.

Step 4: After you have chosen the locations for your trees, you may choose a species from the suggested list provided by the database for each location. At this time, we cannot guarantee that the species you choose will be the species you receive, but we will do our best to honor selections.

Step 5: If this is your first neighborhood tree planting with us stay alert for further information regarding a MANDATORY tree planting informational session provided by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy. Otherwise all groups will receive regular reminders on upcoming dates and steps to be taken before the planting weekend.

All trees must be reserved by March 16th, 2009!

Mayor's Kids Summer Reading Challenge - Volunteers Needed

This year, for the 7th year in a row, Mayor Brown hosted his Kids Summer Reading Challenge, where students were asked to read 7 books over the summer and write a summary on each. As a reward, the students are invited to a prize ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, October 18th at the Buffalo Convention Center

In order to make this event successful, over 300 volunteers are needed. There are a variety of tasks to accommodate all ages and physical abilities. Both teen and adult volunteers are welcome.

There are three volunteer opportunities available:

1) Moving Prizes: Wednesday, October 15th - 12 - 1 PM. Able-bodied volunteers are needed to help carry bicycles (many small children's sizes) from City Hall to the Convention Center (We will be raffling the bicycles and want to keep them in pristine condition).

2) Set Up: Friday, October 17th from 10 AM to 6 PM at the Buffalo Convention Center. Please consider helping on your lunch break or after work.

3) Prize Ceremony: Saturday, October 18th. Volunteers are needed anytime from 10 AM - 4 PM. Different tasks include registration and certificate and prize distribution. There will be both sitting and moving tasks available for those with varying physical abilities.

This is a great volunteer opportunity for both adults and also for teens and college students who need community service hours.

This Labor Day weekend is Wing Fest in Buffalo. Literacy Volunteers will have a table at the event to do crafts and activities with children, recruit new volunteers, and to spread the word about Literacy Volunteers and our mission. It will be a fun, upbeat event with a lot to keep you entertained.

They are looking for volunteers to help out at their table for both Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st. They have different shifts to accommodate everyone. The shifts for Saturday and Sunday are from 10-2, 1-5, and 3-7. If you would like to help out, and get into the event for FREE, rather then paying $5 admission, please contact the office at 716.876.8991 to check shift availabilities. You can speak to the receptionist about the times you would like to volunteer. They can be flexible with your schedule if the times are not perfect for you.

Dear IB Diploma Candidates,

You are Buffalo’s most ambitious and conscientious students! As you move through your experience in IB, we want to assist you in seeking a path to increase your mastery the Extended Essay process. With you in mind, we have developed the 1st Annual IB Extended Essay Summer Institute! Participating in this program is mandatory. It will greatly improve your critical thinking capacity, writing skills, research proficiency, and your approach to the Extended Essay project – all undeniably necessary for successfully completing the IB Extended Essay. This institute is being run at no cost to you.

In an enthusiastic partnership with the University at Buffalo, we plan to take you through an intensive three day collegiate institute where you will have access to a vast array of resources that are normally reserved only for enrolled UB students. You will participate in four seminar courses:
• Academic honesty – what is expected of you as IB Diploma Candidates, proper source citation, and avoiding plagiarism pitfalls.

• Library Research – improving your ability to use a university library while accessing all of its resources during your EE research journey.

• Extended Essay Format – clarifying the expectations of the Extended Essay assignment and providing you with the opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of model EE papers.

• Study skills/Time management – skills that will help you with your Extended Essay and with all of your academic endeavors.

This year, the IB EE Summer Institute is scheduled for three days from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30th through Wednesday, July 2nd at the University at Buffalo North Campus. Buffalo Riverkeeper Volunteer Opportunity

Extra hands are needed to help with a major, annual event June 21, 2008 (described below). A list of needs with an estimate of time follows. Whatever your service hour commitment, they can work with you. They can also help with TRANSPORTATION.

Organization Mission: To inform, and inspire the WNY community to protect and enhance our environment.

Event goal: To provide environmental activities and information for children and their parents, and help youth develop an appreciation and life long commitment to protecting our environment.

Event Structure:
· Environmental organizations set up exhibits and activities for children. In 2007, 22 groups participated, and over 400 children and parents.
· A scavenger hunt is set up for the children to find information, and when completed receive a bag of goodies.
· FREE raffle for bicycle donated by Ski Market, and Buffalo Zoo donation of a Family Pass to the zoo.

Needs:
· Attend planning meetings, design flyers, advertise, stuff goodie bags, call/email exhibitors, and other jobs as needed. Meeting dates are 3/31, 4/28, 5/19, 6/2, at 4:00, site to be arranged. Each session counts as 2 hours, including some travel time. Total available 19 hours.

· Event set up Friday, June 20 at the Buffalo Zoo, 4-5 . 2 hours
· Event Saturday, June 21, 8-5, or schedule arranged. Total available 9 hours. Project TOTAL 30 hrs.

IB Summer Education Opportunities

Oxford Study Courses run a program for IB Preparation, Revision, and Review. The IB Examiners who visited the last week in February said that the courses are extremely beneficial. They are costly, but we were told that the organizer of the program will not allow money to come in the way of having a student benefit from the course....

Volunteer Opportunity at the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival

The Buffalo Niagara Film Festival is looking for friendly and enthusiastic people to help with the festival.

It takes place from March 24 through March 29, 2008.

Volunteers will be assisting in marketing/distribution, guest services, ticketing, theater operations, and festival maintenance.

Volunteers will be required to sign a volunteer commitment form, attend at least one training session, be able to provide a minimum of eight hours per week leading up the festival (16 hours during the festival), and must be at least 17 years of age.

Volunteer Opportunity at JCC

The JCC is having their 4th Winter Carnival on Sunday, January 27th, from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.

This event draws a crowd of approximately 300 people, most of them young families. Volunteers are needed to help run the games, do face painting, help with cookie decorating and the like.

The Winter Carnival is held here at the JCC’s Holland Family Building, 787 Delaware Avenue at the corner of Summer Street.

Volunteers do not need to help the entire time if they have other commitments on that day. The JCC can use some help with last minute set-up and after the event clean-up as well, so any number of hours between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. would be much appreciated.

FYI for Extended Essays

Seniors: The following is a repeat of what I have told you in class. Two clean copies need to be turned in to me (not your advisor) by the end of the day on Friday, December 21. You should indicate your advisor with a sticky note or by writing it in light pencil on the paper. The two papers should be paper clipped together.

The following is an email I sent out to all advisors:

Students will be turning their Extended Essays in to me by the end of the day on Friday, December 21, 2007. They will be turning in two clean copies.

After the break, you will be receiving the grading criteria and papers from me so you can provide your predicted grade and comments for the paper(s) you supervised.

Students should NOT be bringing you another copy of their paper. Your job up until now was to review the paper once and give meaningful comments to the students. If they turned in a lousy paper the first time, it's not your job to re-read it. You can choose to read it again, but it is your choice.

The Child Advocacy Center is looking for assistance at their center, located at 556 Franklin St. in Downtown Buffalo.

They have a children's waiting room with toys that need to be cleaned, a book shelf that needs to be organized, along with donations that need to be either stored or put out for the children. GENERAL GUIDELINES

The Nature of the Extended Essay

The extended essay is defined as an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. Its purpose is to provide candidates with an opportunity to engage in independent research. Emphasis is placed on the process of engaging in personal research, on the communication of ideas and information in a logical and coherent manner, and on the overall presentation of the extended essay in compliance with these guidelines. Many of these general issues, such as the way in which information is handled, the level of analysis and the quality of argument, are assessed through the general assessment criteria. This is reflected in the relative weighting of relative weighting of 2:1 between the general and subject assessment criteria.

The topic of the extended essay is the particular area of study within the chosen subject. Before a final decision is made about the choice of topic the relevant subject guidelines should be carefully considered.

Candidates should aim to choose a topic that is both interesting and challenging to them. The topic chosen should be limited in scope and sufficiently narrow to allow candidates to examine an issue or problem in depth. It should present the candidate with the opportunity to collect or generate information and/or data for analysis and evaluation. Candidates are not expected to make a contribution to knowledge within a subject. A broad topic is unlikely to result in a successful extended essay. A topic which requires no personal research and/or requires an essentially narrative or descriptive approach is not suitable for an extended essay. Similarly, although a reliance on secondary sources is sometimes necessary, an extended essay which only provides a summary of such sources will not be successful. Writing a precis of a well-documented topic is unlikely to result in a successful extended essay.

The Research Question

When an appropriate topic has been chosen, candidates should narrow the focus of the
investigation and formulate a specific research question. For many extended essays this will be phrased in the form of a question, but alternatives such as launching the investigation with a hypothesis are acceptable. By frequently referring to this research question, candidates should be able to maintain the purpose and orientation of the investigation. Candidates are encouraged to formulate a challenging research question but to ensure that it can be explored within the constraints of essay length, time and resources available to them.

The Research Process

Owing to the diversity of subjects and the different approaches to research, this guide does not offer detailed advice on the methods and skills of research. However, a systematic process, shaped by the nature of the subject, is essential to generate and gather information and ideas that can be used to develop a convincing answer to the specified research question.

Organizing the Essay

After careful outlining and drafting, it is likely that the majority of extended essays will follow a structure similar to that described below.

Introduction

The introduction should include: an indication of why the topic chosen is interesting, important or worthy of study some background information and an attempt to place the topic in an appropriate context an indication of whether the topic has been narrowed to a focus of more manageable proportions; a clearly and precisely stated research question; a clear concluding statement of the thesis and argument, i.e. the response to the research question that will subsequently be developed in the body of the essay.

Body/Development

The essential feature of the major section, or body, of the essay is the systematic development of a convincing answer to the research question. The structure and the approach to this section will be shaped by the conventions of the particular subject in which the extended essay is being undertaken. Some subjects may require sub-headings for major sections within the main body. For example, scientific investigations will usually have separate sections for method and results. In some other subjects, however, sub-headings should be avoided because they disrupt the flow and unity of an essay.

Conclusion

The requirements of the conclusion are that it
- is clearly stated
- is relevant to the research question being investigated
- is substantiated by the evidence presented
- indicates issues, unresolved questions and new questions that have emerged from the
research.

Formal Presentation

The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal style appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. The use of typewriters or word processors is encouraged.

The Length of the Extended Essay

The upper limit is 4000 words for all extended essays. This upper limit includes the
introduction, the body, the conclusion and any quotations, but does not include:
- the abstract acknowledgments
- the contents page
- maps, charts, diagrams, annotated illustrations and tables
- the references/bibliography
appendices.

Essays in excess of 4000 words are subject to penalties and examiners are not required to read material in excess of the word limit.

Title

The title should provide a clear indication of the focus of the essay. It should be precise and not necessarily phrased in the form of a question.

Abstract

An abstract not exceeding 300 words must be included. It does not serve as an introduction but presents a synopsis of the extended essay, and therefore should be written last. The inclusion of an abstract is intended to encourage candidates to examine closely the development of an argument within the extended essay and the pertinence of any conclusions that are reached. It is also designed to allow readers to understand quickly the contents of the extended essay.

The minimum requirements for the abstract are to state clearly:
- the research question being investigated
- the scope of the investigation
- the conclusion/s of the extended essay.

The abstract should be typed or word processed on one side of a sheet of paper, and placed immediately after the title page.

Contents Page

A contents page must be provided at the beginning of the extended essay and all pages should be numbered. An index is not required.

Monday, September 10, 2007: Turn in missing EE topic forms.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007: Rough draft finished and given to your advisor for review. You will turn in a sheet with your advisor's signature indicating that you have turned in the rough draft.

Between October 10 and November 19 you should fix any issues/concerns your advisor had and show it to your advisor again.

Monday, November 19, 2007: Final Extended Essay turned into Mrs. Banas. Make sure your advisor has signed off on the final copy.
